Character Background: Prince Adam was a handsome, spoiled monarch who lived in the heart of the forest in the French countryside. He had everything he could possibly want, and everyone did everything they could to please him. Whatever he asked for, no matter how ridiculous the request, he would get it. He put a great importance on beauty; if one didn't meet up to his materialistic standards, they weren't worth his time. This was a fault that would eventually bring him to the lowest point of his life.
One Christmas Eve, an old beggar woman appeared at his castle, asking for shelter from the cold and ruthless winter that had been plaguing the area. All she could offer as tribute and thanks for Adam's kindness was a beautiful rose. Adam sneered at this meek offering, and turned her away. Again, she asked for his help, and being repulsed by her appearance, Adam told her she wasn't allowed in his castle. Much to the prince's horror, the old woman's appearance melted away to reveal a beautiful Enchantress. He begged for her forgiveness, but the Enchantress was resolute in her punishment of him. She placed a curse on his entire castle - the once beautiful forest now threatening and dark, the castle itself turned into a building right out of a Gothic horror story. His servants were transformed into anthropomorphic household objects, each person in a form that reflected their personality: punishment for indulging Prince Adam in his vain, spoiled, and cruel ways.
As for Adam, she transformed him into a Beast; a creature, an animal unlike anything anyone had ever seen. Large bison horns grew from his head, his teeth turned into the fangs and he grew the mane of a lion, his arms and body were that of a bear, he grew tusks of a wild boar, his legs became that of a wolf, along with a tail. The only thing from his previous form that did not change was his blue eyes. The Enchantress was not unfair, however. She gave him the rose she had offered, and told him that the rose would bloom until his 21st year. In order for the curse to be lifted, he would have to learn to love, and gain love in return, before the rose wilted and the last petal fell. If he could not accomplish this, he would be cursed to remain a Beast for all time. She also gave him an enchanted mirror that would show him whatever he wished to see. This was meant to be his window to the oustide world.
Horrified and ashamed by his appearance, Adam locked himself away in his castle. Angry, he destroyed his living quarters section of the castle, breaking mirrors, furniture, and clawing up his self portraits. He became more ill-tempered, so much so that his servants who once obeyed him happily now fear his outbursts and temper tantrums. Being isolated from the rest of society began to have an impact on his temperament. He was less understanding and considerate of others (even more so than he already was), and began to act more feral with each passing year. Adam, or Beast, knew that the curse had changed his appearance, but the psychological effects were much more subtle. He eventually stopped wearing shirts and shoes, wouldn't read any books or work on his schooling, and stopped eating at his dinner table altogether, opting to go hunting instead. Because of this, all proper etiquette and utensil use was quickly forgotten. As time went on, he became more animalistic.
When he turned 21, Beast was especially cranky. He knew what would happen to him if he didn't break the spell; hell, would anyone even want to? Underneath all of the rage and rudeness he exerted, Beast was extremely depressed. He felt as if his fate was already sealed, and that there would be no hope for him. Eventually, he would become nothing more than a wild animal, and would lose absolutely everything. He was too afraid to go out and try to find someone to love, and had given up hope that anyone would even want to try and get to know a monster like himself.
One stormy night, an old, tired, frightened man arrived at the castle. His name was Maurice, and he was an eccentric inventor that lived in one of the distant villages near the castle. He had accidentally stumbled upon the castle after his horse had been spooked by a pack of wolves. Beast's servants welcomed him into the castle, letting him sit by the fire in the Beast's chair, and giving him a warm cup of tea. The servants were delighted to have a guest after all this time, but Beast was not happy in the slightest. Maurice was an unwelcome visitor, a trespasser in his solitude. Seeing him brought up a cluster of emotions - it was a reminder that there was an outside world, and that he was missing all the warmth, love, and laughter in it. Maurice's fear of his appearance made it hit home all the more that Beast was no longer Adam, a handsome prince, but a wild, fearsome animal. Despite Maurice's apologies for intruding, Beast was convinced that he was there to gape at his terrifying appearance. Angry, he threw him in one of the cells of his dungeon.
After several days, Maurice's daughter, Belle, arrives at the castle searching for her father. She wanders into the castle unannounced, moving through its large expanse, calling out for her father. The servants begin to notice her presence, and Lumiere, trapped in the form of a candelabra, decides to lead her to her father via his candlelight. She finds Maurice, distraught over his poor condition. Her father warns her to leave, but before he can tell her why, the Beast arrives.
Beast had heard the rumors throughout the castle of Belle's arrival, and grabs the girl, demanding to know who she is and what she's doing there. The torch Belle had taken from the wall fell and was snuffed out, throwing the dungeon into darkness. Beast paces the dungeon, staying in the shadows so she cannot see him. The girl begs Beast to let her father go, but he retorts angrily, telling her that he shouldn't have trespassed on his land - he holds himself blameless for Maurice's failing health. Belle tells him that if he lets her father go, she will do anything. Beast scoffs at this - there's nothing she could do for him. He turns to leave, but Belle persists, offering to take Maurice's place as his prisoner. Beast is surprised to hear this, disbelieving that a woman like her would stay in this dark, frightening place, all for her father's freedom. Kindness and compassion are things that he had all but forgotten.
Despite Maurice's protests, Belle is determined to see this through. Beast agrees to let Maurice go, but only if Belle promises to stay at the castle forever. Belle asks him to step into the light, and he obliges, showing her his large, monstrous form. She is terrified, but sticks with her resolve, giving him her word that he will stay. Beast releases Maurice as promised, dragging him off before father and daughter can even say goodbye. He throws the inventor into a horse-less, spider-like carriage, instructing it to take him back to the village. He returns to the castle, only to find Belle weeping at the loss of her father, and her previous life. Beast feels somewhat guilty, but he refuses to apologize, and instead offers to show her her room. She may be his prisoner, but he is not without some compassion.
The walk to her room is awkward - he doesn't have much to say, and doesn't even know what to say to make her feel welcome. At Lumiere's urging, he tells her the castle is her home now, and she can go anywhere she wants, except for one place. The West Wing is where Beast sleeps and spends most of his time; it is also where he keeps the enchanted rose. Beast is extremely protective of the flower, since its wilting could be accelerated by people handling it. He's running out of time already, and it would do him no good if Belle only made the clock go faster.
After showing her to her room, Beast demands that she join him for dinner, and leaves her inside her room for the time being. When dinner is ready, he paces in front of his fireplace, becoming agitated the longer it takes for Belle to come down to eat with him. His temper begins rising, even though his servants try to help him be understanding about her situation. They ask him if he's thought of the possibility of her being the one to break the spell - he confides that he has, but he highly doubts she would have any interest in him due to his frightening and ugly appearance. His servants encourage him to try and help her see past his outward appearance, and give him lots of advice. Beast begins to feel overwhelmed by all of the things he has to do, when Cogsworth, the servant sent to bring Belle downstairs, arrives and states that she's not coming.
Enraged, Beast storms over to her room, banging on the door and demanding to know why she isn't coming down. Belle stubbornly refuses to leave her room, even when Beast tries to be polite and courteous to her (the best he can manage, at least). The two bicker, and Beast finally loses his temper, roaring at her that she'll starve if she doesn't eat with him. He instructs his servants not to feed her: "If she doesn't eat with me, then she doesn't eat at all."
He storms into his bedroom in the West Wing, ranting about Belle's stubborn behavior (an irony since he is so stubborn himself). He grabs his enchanted mirror and orders it to show him the girl. He sees Belle talking to one of the servants, and she bluntly states that she wants nothing to do with Beast. After seeing this, his anger is gone. He realizes that he's just fooling himself and that she'll never see him as a man: he'll be nothing more than a monster. Depressed, he sulks in his room for the night.
Belle leaves her room later that night, unbeknownst to Beast. She was led on a tour of the castle by Lumiere and Cogsworth, and they managed to get near the West Wing. Her curiosity proved to be too much; she tricked them into leaving her behind so she could go and see what Beast had hiding there. She discovered his mangled bedroom, torn apart during Beast's tantrums and breakdowns. After exploring the room, Belle finally notices the rose. The glow of the enchanted flower is irresistable, and Belle takes its protective glass covering off to try and touch it. Beast, suddenly aware of her presence in his room, reveals himself. He covers the rose back up quickly, growling at Belle and asks her what she's doing there. Instead of explaining the importance of the rose and what is actually going on, he loses his temper, roaring at her to get out.
Terrified, Belle leaves the castle, ignoring the servants' pleas to stay. Beast calms down, and anguishly realizes that he just scared away the one person that might be able to save him. Feeling guilty, he chases after her into the blizzard. During her flight, Belle and her horse attracted a wolf pack. They were chased down until the pack managed to corner them. Beast caught up to them, and quickly jumps to Belle's defense. He fights off the wolf pack, getting bit and scratched in the process. He has deep gashes in his right arm that bleed badly, and after a growl, Beast passes out into the snow.
Abilities/Special Powers: Beast has no special powers or abilities. He has nothing but animal strength and very sharp teeth, claws, and tusks.

When Beast woke up, he was in the forest. Not his forest, not the one that he prowled in. Here, the trees were healthy. The foliage was in full bloom, and he couldn't help but take a deep breath. Even the air was different. The smells were foreign, and he realized that there was no snow. Glancing around, it was clear that he was far from home.
"Am I...dead?" Beast asked aloud to himself. The last thing he remembered was saving Belle from those starving wolves. They had been ruthless, but he couldn't really blame them. Ever since the curse, food for the predators in the area (including himself) was scarce. If he had been starving, he might have-
No. You're not an animal, Adam. Beast shook his head. He had gotten in the habit of calling himself by name; it helped him to remember that he was still a human underneath it all. He had done the right thing, saving Belle. Even if he died, and this was heaven, it would be alright. Dying for a noble cause was definitely better than living as an animal. But if he were dead, then why would he still be in this form?
His blue eyes glanced down and saw the injury on his right arm. Blood had stained the grass beneath it. It had stopped during the night, but he could still see that it wasn't healing very fast. Ignoring the dull pain, he got up from the ground and stood on his hind legs, sniffing. It was clear he wasn't home, but there had to be water somewhere.
Instead, he caught the scent of flowers, and...people? It was very faint, but he could clearly pick it out from everything else. Beast didn't like the idea of coming across a lot of people, but it didn't mean he couldn't scope the place out first. He started following the scent, licking the wound on his arm as he went. He moved through the woods easily.
Maybe the curse was lifted, he thought for a moment. Maybe she fell in love with me when I saved her, and the Enchantress just lied about turning me back. A crazy thought, but a part of him felt that if he had at least earned the love of someone, that would mean more than regaining his old form. He quickly dismissed these thoughts, and stopped abruptly. He had reached the end of the tree line. Beast lowered his arm and approached it slowly, quietly, all of his senses alert.
In the distance was a sprawling estate. The grounds were well-kept; a beautiful garden with a fountain led up to a massive mansion. To his right, he could see a hedge maze, and in the distance, he could hear the faint sounds of what seemed to be vendors. Whoever lives here must be important or rich, he decided. Beast swished his tail in thought. Perhaps he would watch for now until he got a better idea of who lived there. He couldn't just march right in there. Could he?
"You could," he told himself. "After all...you are a prince." Even though this was true, the thought was more than he could bear. Perhaps later, with the safety of the cover of night, he would get closer. But not right now.
Curling up near the end of the tree line, Beast kept his gaze out on the grounds until he finally dozed off and fell asleep.
First-Person Sample:
[AUDIO]
[The Beast huffs into the microphone, irritated. Well, maybe "irritated" doesn't quite cut it. He's pissed.]
Why have I been sent here??? This is completely unfair! I get the one chance to break this spell and I wake up here! I've been cheated, lied to! THIS ISN'T FAIR.
[The sound of furniture being thrown and broken can be heard as he growls and roars.]
I can't even see the rose! How am I supposed to know how much time I have left? How can I even hope to break this spell without her...? This is a curse, a true curse, one that will never end!
[His breathing is harsh, and the Beast growls deeply once he notices something: a message his Mirror has left for him.]
..."I need to control my temper"...?
[With a loud roar, he breaks his mirror, the sound of glass shattering the last thing heard before the feed is cut off.]
